Ballroom culture was built by Black and Latino LGBTQ+ communities in 1970s New York as an act of survival — chosen family, Houses, realness, joy constructed from the outside in. In Lisbon, that scene has been built from the ground up by people who didn't wait for permission.
On 5 May, 1A+ opens Happy Tree Friends Kiki Ball 2.0 Exhibition — photographs of the Ball shot by Geraldo Ferreira, a young Black photographer from Loures commissioned by AUFSTANDTEAM.
His work is built on consent, on attention, on the trace of people rather than the performance of them. At the Ball, he wasn't documenting from the outside. He was inside the room.
